Today's Challenge: Potty about potatoes!

Ever wondered how roots grow? Well today's challenge will help you see it in real life. For this challenge you will need a potato (this can be any type or any size), a glass, plastic cup or recycled bottle and some cocktail sticks (any small sticks will work). Put 4 cocktail sticks into the side of your potato so it can be placed on the top of your cup or glass (see image below). Fill your cup with water and balance your potato on top. Place this on a sunny window sill and wait for it to grow. Make some predictions about how you think the roots will grow.

Then, check your potato every day and see what roots have grown. This is the same process that would happen if you planted your potato in the garden (only this way you can see it happen).

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

I can't wait to see your roots grow!

Today's Challenge: Design your dream garden!

Have a look at your garden, take note of the shape and try to replicate it onto a piece of paper. Then think about how you would like to design your garden. Think about what types of trees you like or what colour flowers. Would you make more play space or put in a tree house? What would you do for the animals? Could you design variety of habitats in your garden? What about growing, would you like more areas to grow your own food? The possibilities are endless!

Once you have drawn your picture, have a go at labeling in with the different things you have added.

If you’re like me and don’t have a garden, have a go at designing a dream garden (that way it can be as big as you like!)

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

I can't wait to see your amazing designs!

Today's Challenge: Shape Challenge!

In maths you have been taught about a variety of shapes, this could be 2D shapes or 3D shapes (parents I have put a guide below to re-cap your memory). I would like you all to have a hunt in your houses, gardens or out on a walk for as many different natural shapes as you can! This could be a twig that forms a triangle or a rock in the shape of a cube, the only rule is, it has to be something that has been naturally formed.

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

I can't wait to see what super shapes you can find!

Today's Challenge: Flower arranging!

Firstly, you will have to go outside and pick some wild flowers. This could be in your garden or, with some adult support, out on your walk. When you get home, lay out the plants you have picked. Ask your adult for a vase or large plastic cup and fill it with water. Carefully arrange your flower into your vase. Think about how they can be placed. Flowers with short stems would get hidden in the middle and ones with long stems may droop if placed on the outside. Arrange your flowers how you like and when you’re done, maybe you could gift your arrangement to someone in your family!

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

Can't wait to see your beautiful flowers!

Today's Challenge: Make your own pavement paint!

We have all seen lots of children using chalk to draw and decorate the pavements outside their houses. Today I would like you to have a go at making your own pavement paint. For this you will need a bag of cornflower first of all. Mix your cornflower with water to make a runny, water like consistency. If you want to add colour, use food colouring to die your mix. Next, go outside and paint a design on the pavement. At first you will see it looks just like you are painting water on the ground, but after a few minutes, it dries and looks very similar to chalk. If you make a mistake, don’t worry, just use water to wash off the pavement, wait for it to dry and try again!

Today's Challenge: Flip a coin walk!

Warning: Adults please take a charged mobile or map with you on this walk just in case you loose your baring’s!

It’s rare we get the opportunity to go and explore the areas we live without having a route or destination in mind. Today’s challenge will enable you to explore your local area in a way you may not have done before.

You will need a coin for this challenge and one with a clear heads and tails! From the moment you leave your house I would like you to set each direction as either heads or tails. Toss the coin and see which direction you should walk in. At each junction you then come to, repeat this and see where you end up! (Adults towards the end you may want to take control of the coin and tailor the direction you go in to end up home!)

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

Today's Challenge: Spot the Moths!

For this challenge you will need to ask your grown up if its ok to stay up when it is dark, if that’s not possible maybe you could set up the experiment and ask your grown up to take some photos for you to look at tomorrow.

First you will need to hang up a white (or light coloured) bed sheet on your washing line. When it gets dark, you will need to sit outside and shine a torch on the sheet. After a few minutes of waiting, moths will start to appear as they are drawn to the light of your touch. Have a look at the moths and notice how they are different from butterflies. Look at the shape and size of the moths you have found, what do you notice?

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

Today's Challenge: Snail races!

If you haven’t ever tried this, you are in for a treat! Each member of your family needs to find a snail. Once you have one, observe it and make sure you know it’s yours. Set a course for your face with a start line and a finish line (why not but a nice juicy lettuce leaf at the finish line as a reward for your snail). Put your whole family’s snails down on the start line and carefully hold on to the shells. On your marks…. set…. go! Let go of your snails and let them race. When they finish, why not practice your ordinal numbers to see who wins! (first, second, third etc.).

Today's Challenge: Tree Hunt

While out on your daily walk or looking around your garden, I would like you to have a go at naming some trees. The easiest way to do this, is to look at the leaves of the trees and comparing the shape to the guide below. I wonder how many different types of tree you can find?

If you don't have a garden and are unable to go for a walk, why not go upstairs and have a look outside to see if you can recognise any leaf shapes out of your window.

I have attached a leaf ID help sheet and a dial you can make at home. If you don't have access to a printer you can also download a tree ID app from the woodland trust website https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/british-trees/tree-id-app/

Today's Challenge: Stone Art

This idea has come from Mrs Reid and Mrs Clarke!

Today's challenge is to decorate some rocks for your garden. You could use stones to arrange in a pattern on the ground, or you could paint and decorate the rocks. If you struggle to find rocks to decorate in your garden, why not go on a walk and see if you can find a few on your trail and take them home.

I have put a few examples below for you to take inspiration from!

Today's Challenge: Recycling!

As we learnt while making our recycled bottle Christmas tree, it takes 500 years for plastics to biodegrade (turn back into soil). So it is really important we find another use for the plastics we buy!

Today I would like you to use whatever you have in your recycling bin and have a go at making something decorative for your garden. This could be an animal you can hide in a flowerbed, a bird you can hang from a tree, or you could even make something useful like a bird feeder or water bath!

Today's Challenge: Nature Rubbings!

While you are out and about today (this could be in the garden or out on a walk), take some paper and some coloured pencils or crayons with you. When you find a texture or surface you like, place your paper on the surface and use a pencil to colour in (tip: use the side of your pencil or crayon and apply even pressure). You should get a pattern emerge on your page. Collect as many different rubbings as you like.

When you get home, can you make anything with these rubbings? Maybe cut out shapes, create bunting or a piece of textured art? Be creative and make whatever you like!

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

Today's Challenge: Make a treasure map!

Now that you have practiced making a map, I would like you to hide an object in your garden. When hidden, draw a treasure map for a sibling or grown up to follow (make it a tricky route). Watch and see how well they can follow your map to find the hidden treasure. For an extra challenge, why not add in obstacles along the route!

Today's Challenge: Make an obstacle course

I would like you to have a go at making your own obstacle course, this could be in your garden or while your out on a walk. Use things you find around you to create your own obstacles. I wonder if you could even challenge members of your family to complete your course?

Today's Challenge: Can you name the different parts of a tree?

I would like everyone to have a go at naming the different parts that make up a tree..... Go!

Now you have named the parts, do you know the function of each part?

Don't worry if not, here are some facts:

Roots - Suck up all the water in the soil. Roots also anchor the tree in the ground and stop it from falling down.

Trunk - Keeps the tree upright and supports the tree. It is also used to transport water around the tree.

Bark - Is a protective layer on the outside of the trunk (a bit like a shell).

Branches - Come off the main trunk of the tree and spread out. Leaves grow from these branches. Branches vary in size, from almost as large as the trunk to as small as a twig.

Leaves - Collect all the sunlight and turn it into food (in a process called photosynthesis). You can use the shape of the leaves to help you identify the type of tree you are looking at.

Blossoms - Are the type of flowers that grow from the tree and help it to make seeds. These are normally brightly coloured to help attract insects to help pollinate the tree.

Now that you know all the parts of a tree, do you think you could use natural materials to make a model of your own tree?

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.
