Today's Challenge: Make a rainbow!

We all love to see rainbows in the sky, but they only happen in rare circumstances when the sun is shining, but it’s also raining.

Here is the science bit:

As the white light that we usually see passes through the water droplets, it bends (refracts) and separates into the seven colours of the rainbow. White light is really made up of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. You can only see the rainbow if the light is behind you and the water is in front of you.

Now we can’t create a massive rainbow in the sky, we can make our own mini rainbows in many different ways! Here are some examples, have a go yourself!

  1. Stand with the sun behind you and spray a hose of water or pour a watering can to make a fountain. Look for a rainbow of light within the water.
  2. Hold up a container/glass of water so the sunlight goes through it. Place a white sheet/paper onto the ground the other side and spot your rainbow.
  3. Place a mirror/old CD partially submerged in to a container of water. Make sure the mirror/CD is angled to face the sun and place your paper/sheet in between the water and the sunlight.
  4. Hold a glass of water in front of a window where sunlight is passing through. Hold your paper underneath and watch the rainbow appear

How can you make the biggest/brightest rainbow? Does changing the angle of your mirror or height of the water make a difference? Can you think of any other ways to make your own rainbow? Have a play!

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

I can't wait to see your rainbows!

I have included some facts below for you to learn all about them!

Today's Challenge: Torch Tag

Today’s challenge is a game! You can play this game inside or outside. To play indoors, you will first need to make a room in your house as dark as you possibly can. When pitch black, give each player a torch. Now you have to catch your opponent by ‘tagging’ them with the light from your torch! Take it in turns to play and see who’s the best at hiding and who is the best at catching. Alternatively, you can play this game in your garden in the evening when its dark (if your grown-ups let you stay up that late!).  Just be careful not to crash into things as you go and use your torch to help you see as you walk!

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

I can't wait to hear all about how much fun you've had!

Today's Challenge: Make a wooden star!

Everyone is a super star and to show this off why not make a star of your own! For this challenge, you will need to collect 5 sticks or twigs and break them into around the same length. Once you have your twigs, lay them down on the table or floor into a star shape. Using sting or wire, attach each point of your star (you may need a grown up to help you at this point). Once you have tied up all your points nice and secure, you should now have a perfectly formed star.

You could keep your star yourself, but why not give it to someone else to show them you are thinking of them or someone you know is a super star!

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

I can't wait to see your super stars!

Today's Challenge: Nature crowns!

Just as the title suggests, today we are going to make a crown, but not just any crown for an average king or queen! No, we are going to make a nature grown, fit for any nature loving royal or king/queen of the jungle!

First you will need to make a crown shape at home. This can be any shape you like as long as it fits on your head! Once perfectly formed, cover the outside of your crown with double sided tape (or attach some regular tape sticky side outwards). Pop your crown back on your head like a true royal. While outside either in the garden or out on a walk, stick anything you like the look of to the outside of your crown. In no time your crown will be covered in nature and you will be the true king/queen of the wild!

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

Today's Challenge: Make your own Wormery

I know how much children love to find worms outside and pick them up! So why not build a specialised home for them so you can see them working. For this challenge you will need a 2l plastic bottle. With an adult support, cut off the top of the bottle leaving a plastic cylinder. Fill your bottle with a mixture of mud and food waste (See image below to help you). Next you will need to find as many worms as you can and pop them in your bottle. You can observe them straight away, or you can leave your bottle and watch it over time. Make sure if you do leave the worms in the bottle you will need to leave it in the shade and water it so the worms don’t dry out!

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

I can't wait to see your wonderful wormery!

Today's Challenge: Make your own paint!

Ever wondered how paint was invented? Well it all started off in a very simple way and I would like you to have a go at making your own!

First you will need to collect natural (soft) things from around your garden and sort them into similar colours.

Next, use a pestle and mortar (a rock or back of a spoon will also work) to grind down your materials with some water.

You will then be left with your very own paint.

Now test out your paint to see if they work!

Here are a few colour ideas:

Red= Any berries (raspberries, strawberries, avoid wild berries as these can be poisonous).

Green = Grass and leaves

Black = Use charcoal

Brown = Mud

Yellow/pinks = Petals

White = Chalk or cornflower

I would love to see your photos from your challenge, feel free to send me a picture on class dojo! Equally, if you have any problems or questions feel free to message me.

Have fun making paint!

Today's Challenge: Decorate the grass!

To do this you will need to:

First use paper to create a stencil. You will need to think of some shapes you would like to draw.

Next, lay your stencil flat on a patch of grass.

Then grab a sieve from the kitchen.

With your sieve, shake out some flour onto the grass over the top of your stencil. If you haven't got any flour you could use corn flour or even crushed chalk.

Carefully remove your stencil and you should have your shape left on the grass. If you make a mistake, don't worry just get some water and wash it away!
