Year 6 Transition Information

Open Days:

You will find information about most local schools' Open Days on the following website. All of the schools are also happy to arrange tours at other times if you cannot make these dates or wish for a more personal tour of the school. We support taking your child out of school for a short time to visit their secondary school as we recognise how important it is that they feel confident in making the choice for the next stage of their education.

If you have any questions regarding Open Days and school visits, please ask in the office or contact Mr. Easterbrook

As your child comes to the end of their time here at Bradley Barton, you will begin to think of the next stage in their journey- secondary school. On this page, we aim to provide you with the most up to date information that we can from all of the local secondary schools to help you make the best possible decision for your child.

The majority of children from Bradley Barton go to either Coombeshead Academy or Newton Abbot College, but these are not the only options. A small number of children each year take the entrance exams for the local Grammar Schools- Torquay Boys’ and Torquay Girls’, and a small number also choose to go to South Dartmoor Community College or even Teign School. We hope that you find the links on this page informative as you make this important decision.

There are several opportunities to view each school towards the end of year five and at the beginning of year six. We highly recommend that you and your child view a selection of schools to get a picture of what is on offer and to make an informed decision. Once your child has been allocated a place, they will have transition days in July to get to know their new school and their new classmates.

After offers are made and confirmed, we at Bradley Barton will speak with your child’s secondary school and pass on important academic information, as well as giving them a general picture of your child as a member of the school. If you have any information you would like to be shared, you will have the chance to fill in transition booklets for Coombeshead and Newton Abbot College, but you are welcome to contact the school directly with information or to contact us and we can then pass this on.

Parents can apply to the local secondary schools at www.devon.gov.uk/admissionsonline, by completing written application forms and sending them to the Local Authority or by completing a written application form and handing it to us or to the school named as top priority. The closing date for applications will be 31st October each year. Further information, including forms, can be found here: https://new.devon.gov.uk/educationandfamilies/school-information/apply-for-a-school-place
